When to visit?

The best time to visit Varanger is either in March (for wintering King- and Steller's Eiders), in the middle of May (for seabird migration) or in June-July (for the general breeding season). Many good birds can be found in autumn as well, but the rough climate and limited amount of daylight complicate bird watching during the winter.

Spring migration starts with the arrival of Snow Buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) in early April. However, most species doesn't arrive until May.

Most migrants have returned to their breeding grounds by the second week of June, but if you want an encounter with the rare Arctic Warbler (Phylloscopus borealis) you should wait another week or two.

Whenever you decide to visit the Varanger area. Please remember that the climate may be very cold, also in summer. Bring enough warm clothes! And one more thing: There may be an enormous mass of mosquitos during the summer (especially in July). Be prepared!
